In Year Six, we encourage independent readers and the expectation is that pupils read every day. It is your child's responsibility to choose either a book from home or the classroom to have in school. We recommend that they choose a variety of genre. They are required to record the details in a class reading folder which is periodically checked to ensure that their choices are both suitable and challenging. We will be assessing all of the children over the next few weeks to ensure that they are reading at a suitable level.

Crucial Crew - Tuesday 19th and 21st March
On Tuesday and Thursday Year Six children visited St. Albans Fire Station for their 'Crucial Crew' workshop - an innovative and interactive way of delivering personal and safety education messages to 10-11 year old children. Throughout the morning, the children were encouraged to model good behaviour and citizenship through active participation in a range of life scenarios, including First Aid, Rail Safety, Drugs and many other areas.
Mexicolore Workshop - Wednesday 23rd January
Year Six began their study of the Mayan civilisation with a highly enjoyable visit from 'Mexicolore'. The company used music, dance, drama, costumes, artefacts and crafts to bring Mexican history and culture alive for all the children. Thank you to the PTA for funding this event.
Distractions Workshop - Thursday 17th January
Many road traffic incidents are the result of a distraction. Often these distractions are brought about by the use of mobile phones or earphones when out near the roads. These dangers are simulated and demonstrated by walking around a set obstacle course whilst texting or using a portable music player to show how basic tasks can be made much more difficult by such distractions. Thank you to the ‘Safe and Sustainable Journeys in Schools Team’ for visiting our school to provide this valuable workshop for our Year 6 Children.
Year 6 Visit to RAF Hendon
On Wednesday Year Six dressed as evacuees and visited RAF Hendon where they travelled back in time to November 1940, when the Blitz was at its peak. They met a strict and knowledgeable Air Raid Warden, braved an air raid and dressed in authentic World War Two RAF uniforms. It was a fantastic trip and all the children came away with an enhanced understanding of Britain's role during this significant period of our history.
